Creative Stream

CHAT Trust has been working with local young people to develop their artistic talents since 2008. Our focus intially was on music as that was the main interest of the participants accessing the project. However as part of our research carried out in 2010 we identified that young people wished to diversify and alongside the music requested opportunities to make films/videos, pieces of street art and take photographs.

To enable this development in 2011 we opened the Creative Stream complete with access to a bespoke recording Studio that was funded by a grant secured by the young people in 2010. Since then we have added to our resources with a Canon camera capable of shooting decent quality videos plus a bespoke MacBook Pro with software with which to edit.

Through a partnership with GemArts we have been able to offer opportunities to develop a range of Arts-Media related skills and abilities. Young people have been able to:

  • Access Street Art opportunities working with community artist Creative Ginger,
  • Develop as musicians by learning to play instruments, write lyrics, make beats,
  • Learn DJ techniques,
  • Perform at venues such as The Sage Gateshead and The Beacon,
  • Participate in events held by the BBC www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p02yxr6n and Frequencies,
  • Develop photography, video and film making skills

As part of the East By North East GemArts led partnership we have been able to offer our young people the opportunity to get involved with the Arts Award Scheme. In 2015 Fifteen members of The BASE completed their Bronze level award. This is a huge number for our project. In 2016 we are going to have a new group working towards their Bronze, a group of eight working towards their Silver and one working towards their Gold. Involvement in the project includes access to experienced musicians, opportuities to perform live and to develop Studio recorded material for CD's.
