Young Women's Stream

Given the ethnic and cultural diversity of the West End of Newcastle it was highlighted in our research that a Young Women only session was needed.

Following some additional research carried out in 2015 in the form of a questionnaire we opened the Young Women's Stream on February 2nd 2016.

Since opening we have run a series of drop-ins and project specific involvement. Our young women have been involved in jewellery making, beauty, music, video, photography, social media safety, cycling and nail art sessions.

In March 2016 the young women were given the opportunity to get involved with the East By North East Project  working with professionals to develop their musical ability, their dance skills and become involved in the Arts Award Programme. In March 2017 twelve young women passed their Bronze Arts Award and in April 2017 performed at The Sage Gateshead as part of the EBNE showcase.

In an additional project seven young women formed a rap group Gipsy Lipstick as part of the We the Crowd Project where they worked with Annie Rigby from Unfolding Theatre.

Following a performance in the Magpie Suite at St James' Park with other community groups and the Northern Symphonia six of the young women continued with the group and are now a recognised name on the North East Scene. www.youtube.com/watch

As they have increased in confidence, the young women have become involved in making grant applications to The Key so that they could do activities such as horse-riding and ice-skating.
